Bail Month - BAIL FACT #14: Unsecured Release Has an FTA rate Twice that of Secured Release

Bail fact #14 2014Public sector pretrial release proponents make many claims about their effectiveness at supervising defendants and getting them back to court. Yet, while they make these claims, they have yet to produce a single bit of objective evidence or research proving their claim.  The private sector commercial bail industry on the other hand has produced volumes and volumes of independent research showing that the most effective way to ensure the appearance of a defendant in court is through a financially secured commercial bail bond.

In Harris County, Texas in 2010, Charles Nobel, Director of Pretrial Services put this debate to rest when he wrote a letter comparing pretrial release data for 2006-2008.  He specifically compared releases on a unsecured pretrial bond with release on a financially secured commercial bail bond.  The results were extremely telling.  The FTA rate for unsecured bonds was double that of financially secured bonds.
