The budget battle continues in New Orleans over the need for valuable tax dollars to be spent on the VERA Institute.  This latest video shows the testimony of a panel of judges stating that the information provided by VERA is redundant.  There are already sources within the District Attorney’s office and the courts that provide the same function and information as VERA. So the question becomes, why does New Orleans need to pay over $500,000 to an outside group to do duplicate work. 

Additionally, the hearing goes on to reveal that while judges are able to see the pretrial risk assessment and score, they are not able to submit the documents into the public record, even though many of them submit the score as a notation.  What is VERA hiding?  Why don’t they want to share their assessments with the public?  Check out the video below.

The VERA Institute of Justice: Value or Vaudville
