This next Bail Month Fact comes from the 1997 study conducted by the American Legislative Exchange Council that examined release mechanisms in Los Angeles.  The study also looked to quantify the cost of a failure to appear in terms of a financial cost and a social cost.  After determining that the private sector commercial bail industry was more effective at getting defendants back to court, the study was able to quantify the full cost of a failure to appear (social and financial) to the county of Los Angeles at over $25,000 per defendant. Based on this value, it is in the best interest of Los Angeles' criminal justice system to utilize the best form of pretrial release in order to save the county money and keep the public safe.  This best form of pretrial release is private sector commercial bail.
