The next Bail Month Fact comes from a study done in California back in 1997. The study assessed release mechanisms in California’s three largest (most populous) counties, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. The study determined that when a defendant was released OR through a pretrial service agency that they were twice as likely to fail to appear for court (as compared to commercial bail). Once again, this study shows the effectiveness of financially securing a defendant’s release pretrial. It not only better ensures appearance, but also can play a role in reducing recidivism rates, by surrounding the defendant with friends and family who are vested in their performance and behavior.
