Bail Month Fact #7 comes from the groundbreaking study out of the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Robert Morris, Associate Professor of Criminology and Director of the Center for Crime and Justice Studies, looked at over 22,000 pretrial releases in Dallas County, Texas in 2008. As part of this study, he calculated the cost to the county for a Failure to Appear (FTA) to be $1,775. Based on that finding, he was able to determine that the commercial bail industry through its performance, saved Dallas County over $11 million. Additionally, the study pointed out that pretrial service bonds were the worst performing and cost the county the most in terms of FTAs.
