As we approach the end of the first week of BAIL MONTH, we have shared facts from university research studies and private research studies. Today’s Bail Fact comes from a public sector research study conducted by the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. Historically, BJS has conducted a comprehensive annual research study on pretrial release in the 75 most populous metropolitan counties around the country. This ongoing research study was discontinued about 10 years ago, but over the 15 years the study was conducted, the results were compelling. In fact, each year the study produced the same results. Of all the forms of pretrial release, financially secured release through a commercial bail bond was the most effective form of release at getting defendants back to court. Today’s Bail Fact is a quote pulled from the November 2007, BJS Special Report, Pretrial Release of Felony Defendants in State Courts, (Cohen & Reaves).
