A high end restaurant in California is under fire after being caught serving customers cheap fish, while advertising and charging for a more pricier version! They reached a settlement with the DA’s office, but we’re thinking they might have a hard time winning back some long-time patrons!
Odeum, a Mediterranean infusion restaurant, advertised petrale sole on their menu, but it turns out they were actually serving tilapia. And it wasn’t just a one-time deal, it happened between October 2014 and March 2016!
After receiving multiple complaints, the DA’s office conducted a consumer investigation and found the claims to be true. Health and safety codes strictly prohibit restaurants from misbranding or falsely advertising the food they serve, so they were quickly in hot water!
The restaurant now must pay $120,000 in civil penalties and restitution, along with injunctive provisions prohibiting the restaurant from serving false advertised food. They are also offering $30 gift certificates to all individuals who ordered petrale sole during the period in question.
Of course, nobody from Odeum was available for comment. We’re guessing they have bigger fish to fry!
