Since it is Election Day, we thought we would put out some interesting political party facts on crime. Not the kind of “so called” facts you are hearing from the candidates themselves, but real facts based on actual data. The big question we thought we would try to answer is whether you are more safe or less safe based on if you live in a state that tends to vote more Democrat or a state that tends to vote more Republican. So what we did is take a look at the electoral map from the 2008 election results and mapped crime statistics for 2009 (the most recent year following the election) to see which political party had more or less crime. Here are the results:
- 66% of all crime was committed in states that voted Democrat (Based on 7,806,955 crimes)
- 34% of all crime was committed in states that voted Republican (Based on 3,984,019 crime)
- Democrat states averaged 269,205 crimes per state (29 states)
- Republican states averaged 189,715 crimes per state (21 states)
- If you lived in a state that voted Democrat in 2008, than you have a 51% better chance of becoming a crime victim, than if you lived in a state that voted Republican
- However if you live in a state that voted Republican in 2008 you have a 62% better chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime, than if you lived in a state that voted democrat.
- The state with the most crime, California, with 1,474,004 crimes (Democrat)
- The state with the least crime, Vermont, with 15,630 crimes (Democrat)
- The Republican state with the most crime, Texas, with 1,174,813 crimes
- The Republican state with the least crime, North Dakota with 27,209 crimes
So based on this high level view of crime in America, if you live in a Republican state you may have a slightly less chance of becoming a crime victim, however if you do become one, your chances of it being a violent crime may be greater.
While we understand that this analysis is not by any means comprehensive and really only looks at high level general statistices, we hope we gave you all something to think about. Have a great election day and go out and VOTE because it does matter.
