With Federal, State and Local government spending still on the rise, and our economy still in a relative nose dive with no end in sight for a recovery, it is really hard to read this next story out of Chicago. But our job here is not to provide an opinion (yeah, right), but rather to report the news and hopefully entertain you. So here it is.
If you ran a state government and had $2,000,000 to spend, what would you spend it on? Would you put the money towards education and improving the schools? Maybe you would buy some new textbooks or computers for the classroom? Or maybe upgrade some of the older school facilities and bring them into the 21st century? What about some social programs to help people get job training? Or maybe fund a mental health clinic to help those who might not have anywhere else to turn? Whoever you are, wherever you live and whatever your political affiliation, we are pretty sure that the last thing that you would do with your $2 Million is flush it down the toilet.
Well that is what was done in Chicago recently with over $2 Million in tax dollars. More than 1100 inmates…remember that is people currently in prison for committing a crime…you know people not eligible for a bail bond or release because they have been found guilty. These people collected unemployment benefits totaling more than $2 Million. Hard to believe, huh?
It is amazing to think that the system can be so messed up that those running it for an entire year can continue to send these benefits to people who have been incarcerated. And oh yah, by the way, people are supposed to check in every two weeks and certify they are still eligible. If you listen real close you can hear the water and the cash going down the toilet.
