A man was recently arrested for not returning a 2002 VHS movie rental. Did we mention it was from 2002?!

James Meyers was charged with failure to return rental property, which is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200. How does this even happen?

Even better? The rental store where this happened isn’t even in business anymore!
Meyers was recently driving his daughter to school when a police officer pulled him over for a taillight that was out. The officer ran his license plate and soon after, asked him to step out of the vehicle. For a burned out taillight?

Turns out the officer didn’t want to talk to him in front of his daughter, but said, “I don’t know how to tell you this, but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie “Freddy Got Fingered” and never returned it.” Ha ha! It seemed so far fetched that Meyers originally thought the officer was joking!

Despite the officer being very polite and professional, he was dead serious.  Luckily, they let him take his daughter to school and go to work, as long as he promised to turn himself into the police department later in the day, which he did. Mainly because he thought it would all get straightened out once he got to the department and figured out what was going on. So imagine his surprise when officers arrested him and he was taken into custody!

The story took an even stranger turn when the actor in the movie, Tom Green, heard about the story and called Meyers the next day! He said he was happy to support fans of the film, which actually got terrible reviews and only has an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Looks like bureaucracy got a little bit out of control on this case, but so far things are still moving forward and Meyers is expected in court later this month.
