Kids say the darndest things!
Robbie Richardson, 6, has always wanted to be a cop when he gets a little bit older. He finally got his first taste of being on the right side of the law after he called 911 to rat out his dad, Michael, who ran a red light while running errands.
Michael said he stopped at a light near an intersection and proceeded to take a right turn on a red, but Robbie was having none of it! “I told him to stop, but he didn’t listen!”
Michael attempted to explain that it was OK to turn right at a red light under special circumstances, but Robbie wasn’t convinced. “When a green light says go, you go. A yellow light makes you slow. And then a red light makes you stop.” Who taught him the rules of the road? His mom! Definitely not his dad, he said. Ha!
Robbie gave his Dad plenty of notice that he was going to call the cops while they were still out and about, but Michael laughed and didn’t take him seriously. Guess he was wrong!
“I called the police! Easy peasy,” Robbie said. “Um, daddy went past a red light. He was in a brand-new car, my mummy’s car,” he told the dispatcher. Everyone else seemed to get a big kick out of it, too, as it’s been shared over hundreds of times on Facebook!
The dispatcher was a little confused, so he tried to figure out exactly what the boy was talking about. After he got a little more information, he asked to talk to Robbie’s Dad.
Michael was surprised when his son handed him the phone later at home, as the family was beginning to eat dinner. As he remembers, “Michael handed me the phone and said, ‘Dad, somebody called, they want to talk to you. And I look at the number on there, saw 911 and I kind of sank a little bit.” He totally knew what Robbie had done!
That being said, he wasn’t exactly surprised that Robbie stuck to his guns. “He’s a smart kid. When he says he’s going to do something, he does it. He doesn’t bluff.”
Dad apologized to the dispatcher for apparently running the red light, along with his son abusing the 911 system for a nonemergency.
“We talked to him, and told him you can only call in an emergency, but I didn’t think he was going to call like that!” Looks like it worked, because Robbie says now he knows better and he won’t call 911 the next time his father runs a red light.
“When my daddy goes past a red light again, I’ll call the eye doctor so he can fix his eyes.” Oh… from the mouth of babes…
