Well, this is something you don’t see happen. Ever! We may be early in the year, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t already found the dumbest criminal of 2016!
Jason Donte Hayes, 17, recently kidnapped and robbed an elderly woman, but after he let her go, he asked her to meet with him the next day. Huh?! That little old lady was no idiot, though. She got the police involved right away, so Hayes ended up being greeted by the police at their meeting instead of his victim.
Hayes entered the victim’s house through an unlocked first-floor window, where he was covered up with camouflage and concealed his face. He demanded money from the woman, who is in her late 70’s, and when she said she didn’t have any, he forced her into a car so they could drive to an ATM. Once there, he demanded that she withdraw $2,000. He told her, in no uncertain terms, that if she failed to give him the money, he would kill her and her husband, who was still sleeping at the house.
Unfortunately for him, the ATM only allowed the woman to withdraw $460. As he was trying to contemplate his next move, he decided to drive her back to the house, wake up her husband, and “herded the couple” into the kitchen. He continued to talk to the couple for about an hour before he finally told them to just go upstairs and go back to sleep.
Before letting them go, though, he told the woman to meet him at a local store the following day with the remaining $1,500 in cash that he was looking for. For real? What did he think was going to happen?
On cue, the cops were waiting for him when he arrived the following day to collect his cash. The police never thought he would actually show up, but that just shows how dumb this bad guy really was!
The cops quickly moved in and found $363 on Hayes, along with a gold Timex watch that had been taken from the home he ransacked the night before.
Even though he is technically a minor, he has been charged as an adult with kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault and related offenses. He remains in jail on $200,000 bail.
Turns out he had good reason to cover his face as he went charging into the couple’s home. He was a one-time tenant of a rental home owned by the victims! The poor couple is now scared to death as a result of the incident and are now receiving counseling through the Senior Victims Services. Hopefully they will get the help they need and this little punk won’t be able to hurt them ever again!
