Mark Derr, a bail bondsmen, works an industry where it is easy to judge people. But he makes sure to do just the opposite.

“When a person, especially a loved one comes in to get someone out of jail, I try to treat them as I want to be treated, ” Derr said. “I am kind and nice and listen to what is going on.”

A Charlotte resident, Derr has opened Day and Night Bail Bonds in downtown Lincolnton. He can write bonds for all 100 counties in North Carolina, but primarily serves clients in Lincoln, Gaston, Iredell and Mecklenburg counties.

Derr, a graduate of East Lincoln High School, has been working in the bail bond industry since 1996.

He said he appeared on the reality television show, “American Bounty Hunters,” and was a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Also, Derr said he was a professional bodyguard for celebrities, such as Ice Cube, the Dave Matthews Band and Boyz II Men.

Derr is still a professional bodyguard, but has focused his attention back on the bail bonds business, an industry that can be challenging.

“It’s lot of detective work,” he said. “It’s a lot of contacting leads, trying to figure out a person’s habit.”

Derr said he believes people are “innocent until proven guilty,” even if society thinks otherwise.

“I give everyone the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “Even though a person has done something and got into trouble, that doesn’t mean they are a bad person and they should be given a chance to have their freedom.”

Derr, who also has a bail bonds office in Charlotte, believes that his non-judgmental attitude has led to his success in the industry.

“When they walk in the door, I am not judging anyone on their appearance or where they live or how they live,” he said.

“I have people that will call me and come back. Even if they don’t have the money, I try to work with them as much as possible just to help them get their loved one out of jail.”

Day and Night Bail Bonds is at 109 W. Court Square. It is open from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bonds can be handled 24 hours a day.
