The Travis County Jail (TCJ) is located at 10th & San Antonio St., directly behind the Travis County Courthouse, also known as the Heaman/Sweat Court House. With the closing of the “old jail”, which was located on top of the courthouse, TCJ opened its doors in July of 1986. TCJ houses all newly arrested inmates who are awaiting an appearance in court.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office Central Command Security maintains the security of all Travis County court buildings. This section is tasked with screening all persons entering the facility, while also maintaining perimeter security, monitoring building alarms and security cameras.
In April 2001, the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center opened adjacent to the Travis County Jail, off of Nueces Street. It contains a direct supervision booking facility and handles all arrested persons in Travis County. As part of the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center, the tower also houses the criminal courts, probation offices and the District Attorney’s Office.The city of Austin Municipal Court also offices in the Central Booking Facility.
