Gotta have it! That has become the mantra for many consumers this holiday season. Doing and paying whatever they need to make sure that they have the latest gadget for themselves or their family. At what point does having the right “stuff” go too far? Well, it looks like it finally went too far in China when a teenager decided to sell his kidney in exchange for an iPad and iPhone. Crazy, huh? I have both an iPad and a kidney, and I can tell you…while the iPad2 is pretty cool, I really like the kidney a little bit better. Call me crazy.
All in all, nine people were involved in the illegal and rather dangerously foolish transaction. Yesterday their sentences were handed down from the courts in China. The organizer of the whole deal was sentenced to 5 years in jail. The surgeon, who performed the transplant, was sentenced to 3 years. The remaining 7 people were not exempt from criminal punishment because the court considered them to have played a minor role.
The 17 year old was given 22,000 yuan, or about $3,250 in US dollars (which he used to by the Apple products). He also neglected to tell his parents of the deal. Unfortunately he had to eventually tell his mother when he later suffered renal failure. That must have been a difficult conversation to have. So the next time you have to ask your parents for help, like needing a bail bond or something, remember that it is better than having to tell your parents that you sold a kidney for an iPad2.
