If you spend a lot of time on social media sites like Facebook, Google+, Twitter or LinkedIn then you have probably read some pretty funny things that people have posted.  From funny pictures of kittens taking baths to ridiculous videos of bulldogs skateboarding, it is really amazing to think about how much time people have on their hands.  I guess we really shouldn’t complain because at least you are taking the time to read this bail bond blog.  Anyway, the point of this story is that sometimes even the most well intentioned jokes don’t go as planned and even worse can backfire in a pretty serious manner.  Just look at the 20 year old Georgia Southern University student who decided to conduct what he called a “social media” experiment on Tumblr.  His experiment….post a threat on his Tumblr account and see what happens.  Unfortunately, the young man didn’t necessarily think things all the way through because instead of getting a good grade he ended up in jail.

According to authorities the young man posted the following:

“hello, my name is Irenigg and I plan on shooting up Georgia Southern.  Pass this around to see the effect it has.  To see if I get arrested.”

We aren’t sure what type of “experiment” this kid was conducting…or bad joke he was making, and whether or not he was getting school credit for it, but we are pretty sure that his results were probably not what he expected…or maybe they were.  The young man was arrested for making terroristic threats using the internet which is apparently punishable by law for up to 5 years in jail.  Ouch!

While the GSU student claims that the post was not a “real” threat but rather an experiment, authorities are handling it otherwise.  The young man has been in the Bulloch County Jail for 6 months on a $20,000 bail bond. Read the original story below.
