A British man was recently arrested for ripping off several people for over $270,000.  According to reports, he set up a couple businesses while in bankruptcy and fooled investors into giving him stock he couldn’t afford.  At one point he even lied about having testicular cancer as a way out of paying his bills.  He was convicted by the court and during sentencing is when his lawyers pulled out the violins.  They argued that since the defendant was “morbidly obese” and fighting depression (we would be pretty depressed if I got caught ripping people off), that he wouldn’t cope as well in prison as other inmates.  Seriously?  We are under the impression that prison isn’t supposed to be a comfortable place…isn’t that the point?

Well unfortunately we weren’t sitting on the bench that day, because the judge after hearing the legal team’s arguments decided to release the obese man after only 6 months.  We aren’t trying to be the pessimist here, but if you want to prevent people from committing crimes, doesn’t there need to be a punishment…something to deter them from doing wrong since they are not capable of controlling it themselves.  Additionally, we can’t think of a better way to help an obese person lose some weight…put them in jail…even better, when they actually deserve it.  Read the original story below.
